Bavarian Apple Torte
ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Tours has a tradition of celebrating birthdays with a dessert from an area that one of our bicycle tours travels through. This month we sampled a Bavarian Apple Torte inspired by our Romantic Road bicycle tour that takes you through the beautiful Bavarian region of Germany. Staff here rated it an A+ for ease of preparation, presentation and delectability.
Ingredients (8 servings)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Crust:
1/2 cup unsalted butter; softened
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup flour
Filling:
8 ounces cream cheese; softened
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
Topping:
4 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples (about 4 apples)
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup slivered almonds
Preparation
Crust: Cream butter with sugar. Mix in vanilla and flour. Press dough into the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of a 9-inch springform pan. (Line bottom of pan with parchment paper if bottom will eventually be removed.)
Filling: Mix cream cheese, vanilla, sugar, and egg; mixture will resemble pudding. Pour filling over crust.
Topping: Mix apple slices with sugar and cinnamon. Arrange slices over filling. Sprinkle with almonds. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 300 degrees and bake for 45 minutes longer.
Cool before removing side of pan.
Wine Pairing: The sweetness of this torte calls for a late harvest Riesling.
