Cuba – After you book

We are thrilled you are joining us on this ExperiencePlus! Classic tour to Cuba!

While you can expect this tour to fulfill the major elements of our Classic tour style, you may note some differences due to Cuba’s special status as a travel destination.

Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions travelers ask us after booking.

We recommend you bring an attitude of flexibility and an understanding that you may not find the amenities that exist in other destinations. But, a trip to Cuba could be one of the most fulfilling travel experiences you can have.

Questions about the tour reservation and payment

Take a look at your Invoice that we emailed to you with your reservation confirmation email.

Your final payment is due 90 days prior to your departure. Refer to your invoice for the accurate due date. If you’ve paid your balance early or in full, you’re all set.

We’ll send you an e-mail reminder prior to the payment due date with all you need to know.

Things to do right after booking

Cuba requires all travelers to Cuba to have travel medical insurance. Be sure to read our information about Travel Documents necessary for Cuba.

When to get travel insurance

In order to get the most out of the coverage available we recommend that you check whether your policy offers additional benefits if you purchase it within a certain time sensitive period. Go ahead and purchase insurance even if your departure is not yet guaranteed to run (Under normal circumstances, if we cancel the departure you will receive a full refund from the insurance company. Be sure to read the policy closely, and ask the insurance questions so you know what’s covered.)

Your Invoice that we emailed to you with your reservation confirmation provides you with the necessary payment date and balance information.

What’s the food like? What should I pack? What’s the currency and how should I get it? Answers to these questions and more can be found on our Cuba FAQ.

Please fill out your Customer Information Form (CIF). This also covers the Liability Waiver and Traveler Code. Remember we need one form per traveler and per departure, even if you have traveled with us before. Best to do this right after receiving your reservation confirmation e-mail!

Read through the Pre-trip Planning checklist on your itinerary we put together to help you plan.

We know it’s important that you feel prepared for your trip and amongst packing, researching your destination and getting excited, getting or staying in shape is part of the plan. To help you reach your goal, ExperiencePlus! has teamed up with experienced trainers who can help you reach your level. Read all about the training programs.

We do our best to accommodate last minute bike and equipment change requests. However, we cannot guarantee changes less than 30 days before tour departure date.

Preparing for your trip

Refer to the tour packet/itinerary of your booked trip with step-by-step arrival and departure instructions, the meeting time, your tour hotels, daily descriptions, a pre-travel planning checklist, and much more. We included the link in the reservation confirmation email. Hang on to the link to refer back to it. Ask us if you can’t find it anymore!

Please note: If your tour departure is out further than 6 months, please check with us before making firm travel arrangements.

Once your departure is confirmed, you may book flights to Cuba through several major air carriers. We recommend with Exito Travel, an air travel concierge service who offers professional help with complex and simple flight itineraries alike, has access to great business class fares, and can offer expert advice. You can book your flight itinerary directly through Exito Travel, and they will support you throughout your entire flight journey from finding an itinerary to coming home. If you are asked your “purpose” or about the condition of your travel when you book your flight, your response should be “In Support of the Cuban People §515.574”. All ExperiencePlus! organized tour itineraries follow the requirements of that General License.

Due to the nature of organized and group travel in Cuba, ExperiencePlus! is not able to book extra hotel nights for travelers before and after your tour. There are a few websites that may allow you to book hotels for your pre- or post-tour hotel nights. If you are a U.S. Citizen, the General License provided by ExperiencePlus! allows you to legally travel in Cuba as part of the ExperiencePlus! tour group; however, it does not cover your independent non-tour travel time, though it does allow for logistical extra time related to your tour. Please note: If your tour departure is out further than 6 months, please check with us before making firm travel arrangements.

Departure documents

About two weeks prior to your tour departure, we will email you your final departure information, along with access to digital daysheets, a list of your fellow participants, tour leader contacts and tracks (not necessary for navigation).

  • There will be sections of the route where the roads have potholes and are in rough condition. Some days there are optional longer rides available. Shuttles in and out of towns are included more than usual on this tour due to lodging logistics.
  • Due to material shortages, we will not be able to mark the route with arrows on Cuba tours. As a result, you will find increased Tour Leader and driver support on Cuba tours. You will still be able to ride independently and at your own speed without the worry to check cue sheets, tracks, or the fear of getting lost. Some sections may require that we ride as a group. Tour Leaders will discuss the upcoming routes during our usual daily briefings.
